Learning and Development

We follow the holistic approach to learning and development laid down by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)(2017).

This framework is based around the 4 themes of A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning and Development.

Each theme is supported by a principle and 4 commitments. For example, the principle related to Positive Relationships is that children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. The commitments are as follows:

Respecting Each Other: Every interaction is based on caring, professional relationships and respectful acknowledgement of the feelings of the children and their families.

Parents as Partners: Parents are childrens first and most enduring educators. When parents and practitioners work together in early years settings, the results have a positive impact on childrens learning and development.

Supporting Learning: Warm, trusting relationships with knowledgeable adults support childrens learning more effectively than any amount of resources.

Key Person: A key person has special responsibilities for building relationships with parents and for working with a small number of children giving them the reassurance to feel safe and cared for.

To support learning against each area of the EYFS we provide a variety of activities which the children are encouraged to take part in (some messier than others!), however there is no compulsion for your child to do specific things. Our focus is completely child led, they decide what they want to do and when.

We constantly observe your childs progress against the areas of learning within the EYFS and record these observations through taking notes and photographs (with your consent). These are compiled in your childs Online Learning Journal (Tapestry) which is available for you to view and contribute to at any time. Information and details about Tapestry features are available here.

This all seems quite complex, but we deliver the EYFS through a well planned, free play approach which to the children just feels like fun!
